Make Room for Baby® is the culmination of more than 20 years of interior design and workroom experience. Starting out in local arts and craft shows, Shirley Cohen's distinctive chintz-lined baskets quickly grew into a thriving business. In 1988, she began marketing under the company name of “Bows & Ivy”.

Later, “Bows & Ivy” expanded its product line to inclued a wide variety of accessories in coordinating fabrics, This let to “Baby Bows & Ivy”, a specialty line of European-style clothing for infant and toddlers. A real industry pioneer, they were the first to bring designer fabrics into children's fashion.

In 1991, Shirley closed “Bows & Ivy” and began working as an independent designer and consultant. Applying her background in sewing, quilting and crafts, she loved working with the designers in creating unique pieces for their clients that incorporated a variety of sewing techniques and styles.

Working together with designers and their clients, she became the liaison between the designers and the workrooms as the projects and responsibilities grew. Eventually handling their drapery, bedding and pillow designs. Shirley's in-depth understanding of sewing and construction combined with her appreciation for distinctive designs made her a true asset to the industry.

In 2001, Shirley began providing her services under the business name, “The Detailed Home”. During this time, she found her real passion in nursery room design.

Realizing the industry lacked an 'easy to make' bumper with designer fabric and quality inserts that were removable, she carried it a step further by making it into a kit that anyone with basic sewing skills could use.  This has opened up unlimited design concepts in fabric, style and often huge savings without sacrificing quality.

And, so marked the beginning of Make Room for Baby®.
